Alexander John George

September 24, 1931 — September 21, 2020

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men, yet they cannot fathom the work that God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice and do good while they live.
Ecclesiastes 3:11-12

Alexander John George was born in Jackson, Mississippi, on September 24, 1931 to Greek Immigrant parents, John and Ida George. He passed to his eternal home on September 21, 2020.

When Alex was 9 months old, his mother passed away leaving his father struggling to raise four young boys alone in America. After writing family in Greece, arrangements were made for Ida’s sister, Philothea, to come to America, marry John and raise her sister’s sons as her own. Alex grew up in Jackson, Mississippi, and graduated from Central High School. Like many Greek immigrants, Alex started at a young age working at the family restaurant. He worked with his father until he joined the United States Marine Corps.

Along with his older brothers Nick, Gus, and Manuel, Alex proudly served his country, in the United States Marine Corps. As a recruit, Alex earned an expert rating in both rifle and pistol. As a result, he became a member of the USMC Rifle and Pistol team as well as an instructor of recruits at Parris Island. Alex received an honorable discharge as a Sergeant in 1954. After the Marine Corps, he later attended Mississippi Southern.

In 1955, he married his sweetheart, Jimmie Nell Walters, who he often confessed was the only one who would have put up with him. As she began to suffer from Alzheimer’s, Alex insisted on standing with her as she had with him. He often referred to her as an angel.

To know Alex was to know a man with boundless energy and creativity with passion to serve his community and to help others achieve and reach their potential. In the mid-1960s, Alex took advantage of the opportunity to go into business for himself by investing as a franchisee with McDonald’s Corporation. He opened his first McDonald’s on North 18th street in Monroe and expanded to owning multiple locations throughout Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi. The Founder of McDonald’s, Ray Kroc, took notice of Alex’s determination, dedication and work ethnic and recognized him at an Owner Operator Convention as the example of an exemplary franchise owner.

Alex truly enjoyed serving. Helping people, businesses and charities succeed brought great joy to him. He understood the power in unity and was driven to be a part of growth and positive change. Alex was honored to serve on committees and boards and thrived on watching others and the community succeed. He served 22 years on the Tourist and Convention Bureau and loved every minute of promoting Northeast Louisiana. Alex was honored to work alongside other local visionaries to spearhead the establishment of the Monroe Ronald McDonald House, The Learning Tech Quest School, and various other businesses. Charities were important to Alex and dear to his heart was how he could help the Greek Orthodox Church through bake and gyro sales. Again, he wanted the community to be introduced and feel welcomed to the Orthodox Church.

Alex was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ida George, his stepmother, Philothea George and his three brothers Nick, Gus and Manuel George.

Alex and Jimmie enjoyed 65 years of marriage and were blessed with three children: Dan George, Brenda Thomas and Jennifer Davis and her husband, John. Another joy in his life was his grandchildren: Matthew Thomas, Sarah Cho and her husband David, Anna Butler and her husband Blake, Alex, Stathi and Peter Davis as well as his great grandson, Dylan Thomas.

We also want to recognize and thank James Moses, Beth Davis and Jennifer Benson for loving, caring and serving Alex faithfully.
