Mr. Halley died Thursday after a lengthy illness.  He was born in Lafors Texas on August 27, 1930.  In 1938, at the age of 7, this enterprising business man stacked his first half-pen of pulpwood which he cut with a bucksaw.  Being the oldest boy of 10 children, the responsibility of having to help his father work in the wood business fell on him and became his livelihood throughout his life.

In 1951, Bill played his first season with the Brooklyn Dodgers as a pitcher.  After his final walk to the dugout in 1956, he simply swapped playing fields and walked into the wood business fulltime and eventually became one of the largest pulpwood producers in Union Parish.

Mr. Halley also ventured into the restaurant business resulting in Bonanza Steak Houses and Popeyes Fried Chicken franchises in four states.  He also went into the chicken growing business for ConAgra with his son, Kent, and in 1996, they had built a total of twelve houses which his son now owns and operates.

On a more personal note, he was a lifelong member and supporter of Antioch Baptist Church.  He dearly loved his church family.  Mr. Halley was a 32nd degree mason and a member of the Barak Shrine Temple and Jesters.  He was a well-respected man in his community and was known for his close family ties and sharing with others in times of need.

He was preceded in death by his parents Claude and Flossie, Sister Claudie Mae an brothers Mick, Jake and Tony.  Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Kent and Ann Halley of Farmerville, La., three daughters and sons-in-laws, Sharon and Larry Stewart of Farmerville, Teresa and Dr. Richard Willis of Calhoun, La and Debbie and Peter Branch of Farmerville, La.  Three sisters, Dorothy Gilmore and Molly Sutton, both of Sterlington, LA and Nell Whitt of Dauphin Island, Alabama, nine grandchildren, Kenneth Halley, Jamey Halley, Amanda Tull, Von Albritton, Justin Albritton, Bo Willis, Dr. Kelley Sherling, Dr. Billy Branch and Christina Nguyen and nineteen grandchildren.

He is also survived by his lifelong friend Mr. Don “The Boss” Barron and numerous nieces, nephews, brother and sister-in-laws.  Special thanks to Ms. Janice Hector and Ms. Rene “Big Angel” Hausley of Farmerville, who were devoted to caring and ministering to our Dad during these last eight months.  He dearly loved you.  Also thanks to Dr. Kerry Anders and nurse, David Holloway, and staff of La. Hospice for their support and loving care during this time.
