CSM Lehman Earl (Lee) Fisher

December 18, 1924 — December 22, 2011

Command Sergeant Major Lehman Earl (Lee) Fisher, 87, passed away on Thursday, December 22, 2011, after a courageous battle with ongoing health problems. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, December 27, 2011, at Lakeshore Baptist Church with Rev. William Smith officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.

Lee Fisher was born in Baskin on December 18, 1924 and has lived in the Monroe-West Monroe area all of his adult life, with the exception of time spent in the Army. He was a graduate of Ouachita Parish High School. At the age of 18, Lee was inducted into the Army during World War II. He credits one year of typing in high school with his being assigned to the Signal Corps Communications Battalion. His duties allowed him to serve in four capital cities including Washington D.C., London, Paris, and Berlin. Lee took every opportunity to see the part of the world where he was serving.

After the war, Lee enlisted in the Army Reserve and served 38 years, retiring as Command Sergeant Major, the highest honor of an enlisted man. Lee’s private career consisted of 34 years with the U. S. Postal Service, working up to Building Superintendant, Supervisor of Maintenance.

Lee was ordained as a deacon at the Lakeshore Baptist Church where he served in many capacities. He was in charge of maintenance for many years and served on many committees. He was a member of the Senior Adult “Beacons” group and a faithful member of the choir as long as his health allowed.

He loved playing Mexican Train Dominoes with his domino group up until the last few weeks of his life—and he loved winning!

After he and Nell married in 1987, they built their home on Joe White Road and have enjoyed many hours working together in making it his “haven of rest”. They also enjoyed traveling. Lee’s goal was to travel to or through every state in the Union, a goal he was proud to have reached—including Hawaii and Alaska. Their travels also included a tour of Europe and a Caribbean Cruise.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents, Norris Ray and Bessie Greenwood Fisher; two brothers, Clarence Fisher and Frank (Bud) Fisher; his first wife, and the mother of his children, Juanita Terrell Fisher.

He is survived by his wife, Nellene S. Fisher (Nell); a daughter, Sharon Scott and husband Tom of Monroe; son, Stephen (Steve) Fisher and wife Janet of Monroe; four granddaughters, Shannon Rider (Clint) of Monroe, Heather Poole (Rob) of Alexandria, Ashley Fisher and Allison Fisher, both of Monroe; five great-grandchildren, Scott and Christian Rider and Madeline, Andrew, and Grayson Poole; three step-daughters, Gwen Dingler of Ruston, Gaynell Kelly of Virginia Beach, and Cammie Pyles of Crystal Springs, MS; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Scotty Barnes, Pete Davis, Glen Bennett, Barney Tucker, Gene Ford, and Gary Fisher.

Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.

The family wishes memorials be made to the Lakeshore Baptist Church, the Cancer Foundation League c/o NELA Cancer Institute, 411 Calypso St., Monroe, or the charity of the donor’s choice.

The family would like to thank Louisiana Hospice for their care. A special thanks to caregivers Brenda, Susie, and Gail.
