Don Allen Hoyt

Don Allen Hoyt was born on December 8, 1944, at Fort Benning, GA, and has entered into his eternal home on Monday, March 14, 2022, surrounded by his family.

Don joined the Navy in 1962 and after his time was complete, he returned to New Orleans in 1966, where he began working with a local phone company, and at that time, he met the love of his life, Charlotte Hicks Hoyt, the two married six weeks later and moved back to Monroe. One of his best blessings was their daughter, Brandi Hoyt Benson.

He graduated from ULM with a Bachelor of English and Master of English. He taught at Wossman High School, Director of the Community Action Program, City Planner at West Monroe, and teacher at Grambling State University. He received his second Master Degree in Public Administration. Don received an offer to City Manager in Litchfield, MI. Moving back to the south he was City Manager in Valley, AL and Anniston, AL. He also served as Secretary to the Downsville Charter School Board. Don attended Holmesville Baptist Church in Downsville, LA.

Don was an accomplished writer having been published in many poetry books. He also had a short story and a novel published. Don enjoyed his antique car and antique radio collection. He was a history buff and spend many hours discovering his family history. His most favorite title was being called “Paw”. He loved his grandsons and spent time helping them with school projects.

Don is preceded in death by his parents, Richard L. Hoyt and Claire McBee; and a great granddaughter, Estella Marie (Essie) Benson.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 55 years, Charlotte Hicks Hoyt; daughter, Brandi Benson and husband Charles M. Benson, Sr. (Buckshot); two grandsons, Charles Michael Benson, Jr. and wife Emily, and Beaux Allen Benson; and his most precious blessing of two great granddaughters, Poppy Benson and Maison Benson; brothers, Gerrie L. Hoyt in New Orleans, LA, Rick Hoyt and wife Brenda in Fayetteville, AR, Richard Dodge and wife Carol in Gulfport, MS, and John Hoyt and wife Pam in South Carolina; sister, Sueann Demo in Las Vegas, NV; and many of extended nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, March 17, 2022, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe, with Rev. Jerry Whitman officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. until service time on Thursday.
