Dot Adams
Start, LA

Dorothy “Dot” Thornton Adams passed away on June 25, 2013. Dot was an elementary school teacher, devoted to her beloved students at work and to her family and church at home. She had many interests at various times in her life, including painting, gardening, sewing and fishing. Most of all, Dot loved to travel.
Along with her husband, Arlon, and their children, Steve and Jay, Dot traveled for many years throughout North America. Her modes of travel included traveling with an airstream travel trailer, riding on several beautiful touring motorcycles while tent camping and in later years, traveling by motorhome, frequently towing her fire-engine-red Jeep Renegade, which she had selected and ordered to her own specifications, just prior to her retirement.
Over the years, her grandchildren and family friends often joined Dot and Arlon on their trips. Their travels from tiny Start, La. included visits to the metropolitan areas of New York City, Los Angeles and Washington D.C. However, Dot particularly loved the great outdoors and nature and her favorite vacations spots were the rugged vistas of Alaska, the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, Yellowstone National Park, the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, the California coast, Glacier National Park, and Nova Scotia. In the Fall, Dot enjoyed the changing of the leaves in Vermont, Arkansas, and particularly the Amish country of Ohio, where she and Arlon spent many contented Fall seasons during their retirement years. In the Winter, Dot and Arlon spent much of their time in the Lower Rio Grande Valley along the Mexican border, where they joined other “Winter Texans” for many years.
Dot was preceded in death by her Father, John Dewey Thornton, her mother Audie Simmons Thornton and her siblings, Dale, Douglas, Donald, Jimmie Faye, and Perkins.
Dot is survived by her husband of nearly 56 years, Arlon, as well as her sons Steve and Jay, their wives, Lucy and Rayne; her grandchildren, Chris Adams, Brandi Adams Watters, Sean Adams and Ashleigh Adams; and her great grandchildren, Tyler Adams, Brayden McCarley, and Kinzlee Watters. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews and dear friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 27, 2013 from 5 - 8 p.m. at Start Baptist Church.
The funeral service celebrating Dot’s life will be on the following Friday at 10 a.m., also at Start Baptist Church under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home-Rayville.
