Dr. Arlon Adams
Start, La

Arlon Adams passed away on January 10, 2021. Arlon was an educator having served as a basketball coach, principal and Superintendent of Schools in West Carroll and Richland parishes. He earned his undergraduate degree from Northeast Louisiana College, a Masters degree from Ole Miss and his Doctorate from Northwestern State University. While at Northeast, he played guard on the basketball team and was a hurdler for the track team. It was at Northeast that he met his future wife, the love of his life, Dot Thornton.

He had many interests at various times in his life including hunting, fishing and golf. Most of all, he loved to travel. With his young family, Dot, Steve and Jay, he spent time at Toledo Bend and travelled around the country during the summers towing an Airstream. He and Dot also ventured as far north as Canada on a Honda Goldwing while tent camping. In later years, they continued to travel in their motorhome towing their motorcycle or their fire-engine-red Jeep Renegade.

They loved the great outdoors and spent time exploring Alaska, the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Yellowstone National Park, Yosemite, the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, the Oregon and California coast, Glacier National Park and Nova Scotia. In the Fall of the year, they experienced the changing of the leaves in Vermont, Arkansas and particularly the Amish country of Ohio where Dot and Arlon spent many happy Fall seasons during their retirement years. In the winter, Arlon and Dot spent much of their time in the lower Rio Grande Valley along the Mexican border, where they joined other “Winter Texans” for many years.
Arlon was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Elvin Adams, his wife Dot, and his siblings, Carolyn Adams Etheridge and Margie Adams.

Arlon is survived by his sons Steve and Jay and their wives Lucy and Rayne; his much beloved grandchildren Chris Adams, Brandi Watters, Sean Adams and Ashleigh Adams; and great grandchildren, Tyler Adams, Brayden McCarley and Kinzlee Watters. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and dear friends.

The funeral service celebrating Arlon’s life will be a graveside service at 1 p.m. at Start Cemetery on Friday January 15, 2021.
