Edward Wallace Hargon

September 7, 1933 — July 6, 2022

Edward Wallace Hargon, age 89, of Monroe, La., passed away early in the morning of Wednesday, July 6th, 2022, at his home.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 9th at 2:00 PM in Talullah, La., at Memorial Park of Tallulah. Arrangements are by Mulhearn Funeral Home.

Wallace was born in Tallulah, La., to Parvie and Florence Hargon on September 7, 1933. Growing up helping his father with the family dairy farm, Wallace developed a tireless work ethic, and he soon discovered what became a lifelong passion when he began playing football. He played the sport throughout high school and college and afterward, went into coaching as a profession. His coaching career took him to Copiah-Lincoln Junior College and eventually to ULM, where he coached until the late 1960s. Wallace was an inspirational coach, and countless former players reached out to him to thank him for the outsized impact he made on their lives. He had a unique talent for helping others discover their own strengths. When Wallace left the coaching profession, he became the Parish Manager for the Ouachita Parish Police Jury. Later, he would return to another vocation he was passionate about by becoming a full-time educator.

As a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Wallace played an instrumental role, especially during a critical period of revitalization for the church. Pastor John Mabray commented that Wallace was a stalwart leader and faithful servant of the congregation through challenging years. Wallace's leadership and vision helped significantly expand the scope of Covenant’s ministry, which, due to growth, now worships in a new sanctuary.

Wallace's greatest role, however, was as beloved husband to Ann Hargon and as father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather. His support and care for his family provided great strength and unfailing stability during times of hardship as well as joy. He leaves many treasured memories behind for his family as well as for his countless students and football players to carry forward.

Wallace is preceded in death by two children, Michael and Elizabeth Hargon, and his daughter-in-law, Susan Hargon.

Wallace is survived by his wife, Ann Hargon; his children, Mark and Patrick Hargon; grandchildren, Chad Hargon and his wife Tara Hargon, Kristen Hargon Booth and her husband Steve Booth, Ashley Hargon, and Rook Hargon; great-grandchildren, Christian, Braylon, and Preston Booth, Liam Hargon, and Arwynn Bonnett; his two sisters Florence Narron and Frances Smith; and his sister- and brother-in-law Judy Rankin and Buddy and Faith McClure.
