Harry Petty

Funeral services for Harry H. Petty, 80, of Monroe, will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, May 9, 2016 at Mulhearn Funeral Home with Rev. Stan Wyatt officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery. Harry passed away on May 9, 2016 in Monroe, La. He graduated from Neville High School in 1953 and was a member of the high school band. He went to NLU on a band scholarship to play in the marching and concert band. While at NLU, Harry worked as a life guard at Swayze Natatorium teaching swimming lessons, was a member of the Monroe Police Auxiliary, and coached basketball at Lee Jr. High. He then served in the U.S. Army and played trombone in the 77th Army Band. He was employed in 1961 at Monroe Police Department and was their first college graduate on the force. He retired after 20 years with the rank of Captain. Harry had numerous accomplishments during that 20 years, including Commander of the auxiliary unit, head of the SWAT team, aero surveillance plane, and instrumental in the 1st rescue unit. He was a member of the state quick draw team and a one time state champion. He coordinated security at Neville High School football games for a number of years. Harry was a life time member of College Place Baptist Church and served as usher chairman and very active in church softball. In his later years Harry enjoyed hunting, singing in nursing homes and making his famous bread that he shared with many friends. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Polly McDuffie Petty; children, Dr. Fred Harper Petty and wife Suzanne of Baton Rouge, LA; and Laura Petty Hall and husband Dr. Joel Hall of Alexandria, LA; grandchildren, Emily, Camille, Erin, and Daniel Petty all of Baton Rouge, LA; and Ben, Anna, and David Hall all of Alexandria, LA; two sisters, Mary Petty Peterman of Atlanta, GA; and Carol Petty Harris of Sparta, NJ; brother, Allen “Pete” Petty and wife Carolyn of Shreveport LA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Ben Hall, David Hall, Daniel Petty, Bill Phillips, Ramsey Ogg, and Dr. Rusty Hughes. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bobby Joe Oden, Bill Wilson, David McDuffie, Charlie Myers, Willis Watson, and members of the College Place Baptist Church Sanctuary Sunday school class.Visitation will be 5:00PM until 7:00 P.M.
