Funeral services for John “Johnny” Nelson O’Neal, 53, of Sterlington, will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, December 30, 2010, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe with Rev. Clyde Dearman and Johnny’s friend, Britton Currie, officiating. Private family burial will be at Hasley Cemetery in West Monroe, LA.

Johnny passed away at his home in Sterlington, LA after a lengthy battle with cancer on Friday, December 24, 2010. Johnny was born November 10, 1957 in Monroe, LA.

Johnny was a well-known singer, songwriter, musician and performer, who knew how to reach an audience and leave them with the feeling of a real person-to-person connection. O'Neal has also been on the Louisiana Artist Roster and has played many shows thru the National Endowment of the Arts and the local arts community as well as many charity events everywhere from New Orleans and Florida to France. Johnny opened for many national performers like J.J. Cale, Michael Murphy, Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, David Allen Coe and Percy Sledge. He was voted Entertainer of the Year by the readers of Delta Style Magazine.

Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, John E. and Velma O’Neal; sister, Sharyn Ann O’Neal; his paternal grandparents, William Floyd and Mildred O’Neal; and maternal grandparents, Morris and Ruby Nelson..

Survivors include his wife, Rhonda S. O’Neal; , his “four-legged son” Max; three aunts, an uncle, several cousins; his father-in-law, Vernon "Shorty" Smith; his sister-in-law, Dorothy Hunt; his brother-in-law, Charles Smith and wife Jeananne; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Schwab, Rain Jaudon, Patrick Kennedy, Chris Snellenberger, Jeff Semmes, and John Funderburg. Honorary pallbearers will be Ken O’Neal, Charles Smith, and Vernon “Shorty” Smith.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: The Friends of Johnny O’Neal account at Progressive Bank, the Cancer Foundation League, the Ouachita Parish Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
