Marion S. Meriwether

A celebration of the life of Marion S. Meriwether -- known to everyone as "Sunny" -- will be held on Saturday, April 26th at her home in Monroe. The open house will be from 4 to 8 p.m. All of Sunny’s friends are invited to come and share stories and reminisce.
Sunny was born January 25, 1952 in Tennessee. Her family moved to Monroe in 1957, and Sunny's heart always called Monroe "home". She graduated as a National Merit Scholar from Neville High School in 1970. She then attended the University of the South in Sewanee, TN before returning to Monroe to complete her Bachelor of Arts at Northeast Louisiana University followed by earning her Master of Arts in Communication.
Throughout her time Sunny engaged actively in the life of her community. Early on, she joined her Episcopal Church Youth Group and made a mission trip to Mexico. As a youth and continuing into her adult years, she was passionate about her involvement with Strauss Theater and NLU Theater as well as summer stock in Texas. In her adult life, her community and civic groups included the Monroe Symphony League Board, Northeast Louisiana Arts Council, the Ouachita Council on Aging and many other arts organizations. She loved gardening and participated enthusiastically in the Louisiana Gardeners Group.
As a professional broadcaster Sunny worked in various media outlets including KARN radio in Little Rock, AR where she was the Legislative Reporter and covered Governor Bill Clinton before returning to Monroe to serve as KEDM Public Radio’s first News Director in 1991. She was very active in the Louisiana Associated Press Broadcaster’s Association and won many journalism awards during her broadcasting career. While at KEDM, she started the Lagniappe and Friday Folio programs. Her work at KEDM elicited a great deal of local community appreciation and support.
Sunny was married and divorced twice (William Griffith, David Slemmons) before meeting her ultimate life partner Joe Saunders. After 15 years in a relationship of mutual respect and support, Sunny and Joe married on Christmas Day in 2008.
Sunny was preceded in death by her parents, Thompson White Meriwether and Patricia Pearson Meriwether. She is survived by her husband Joe Saunders; her daughter Mabry Slemmons Agnew (husband Brendan); her sisters Charlotte Wrather (Chris) and Betty Adkins (Marty); her dog Duncan; her aunt and uncle Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Pearson; and various nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.
