Mildred (Mimi) Hammons Scruggs

February 12, 1919 — June 24, 2012

A family graveside service was held for Mildred Scruggs at Mulhearn Memorial Park Mausoleum on Monday, June 25, 2012. Rev. J. Roddy Taylor, First United Methodist Church, officiated. She died June 24, 2012, at the Terrace in West Monroe after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Mildred was born February 12, 1919, to Herbert Osie and Emma Hammons in Downsville, LA. She married James Scruggs in 1946 and began an adventure which took her far from her home. Making a home for her family wherever the Air Force moved her, she travelled extensively.

When she and her husband retired in Monroe, she remained devoted to her family and was well-known for her “Sunday dinners” of fried chicken, to which all were invited, and her Christmas celebrations, which she made special for everyone.

She enjoyed her ceramics and her needlework, but she especially loved her church, First United Methodist, her Sunday school class, and her UMW group.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Scruggs, Jr., and her brothers, Purvis Hammons, Jack Hammons, Harold Hammons, Max Hammons, and Don Hammons.

She is survived by her children, Mary and husband Ad Walker, Jimmy and wife Julie Scruggs, Pam and husband Herndon Wilkins; grandchildren, Christa Pazzaglia, Katie Little, Benjamin Scruggs, Michael Wilkins, and Aimee Wilkins; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Jo Sebren; a special sister-in-law, Verlin Hammons; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to Dr. Kerry Anders, who has been there since the beginning; Jennia Adams of Louisiana Hospice, who is one of God’s true Angels; and all of the loving caregivers through the years at the Terrace.

Please make any memorials to First United Methodist Church or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
