Dear Nelda,
I have rarely written you in our 56 years of marriage. I’m supposed to write an obituary but please think of this, my dear, as a love letter.
By now you have had a glorious reunion with your parents, Norman and Inez Rogers as well as your sister, Norma Lucille. We who remain miss you. Especially your sister and best friend, Mary and her husband Jody Lofton, Monroe; their children, Michael, Sterlington, and Michelle, Youngstown, FL; and your daughters Cynthia Brennan, Slidell; and Denise Rainey, Monroe. Also, your grandchildren Carrie, New Orleans; Morgan, Lafayette; Jennifer and Allie, Monroe; Dakota, Slidell; and your great-grandson, Bradley, Monroe.
We met on your 17th birthday – 1955. You and your ever present friends Carol and Sue had come from Waterproof to a basketball tournament in Ferriday. From Wisner I was there with two friends – looking for GIRLS. We spotted your trio and despite our best efforts, we were rejected. Nelda, for over 58 years I never knew what had happened next. A few days ago I spoke with Sue and she informed me that as I was walking away from you at that ball game, you pointed at me and said, “I’m going to marry him.” June 1, 1957 we were wed.
After four years of being as poor as church mice, we both received our teaching degrees from Northeast Louisiana State College (now ULM) and I was commissioned as a 2LT into the Army. Our income increased only slightly whereas our cost of living doubled.
With your extraordinary sense of adventure for what lay ahead, that didn’t really seem to matter. In our 22 years of military life you were our rock. We were stationed in five states as well as the Panama Canal Zone and West Germany. Again you were our rock, single-handedly holding the family together for two years while I served in Korea and Vietnam. Everywhere we lived you taught school - Fifth grade was your favorite. You were always a people person, genuinely interested in and comfortable around anyone. You were so good that Nelda’s house was where everyone wanted to go for great food and socializing. Because of you our children grew up knowing that a happy home meant a home full of people and Laughter.
Nelda, you were still an aggressive people person when we returned to Monroe for me to teach JROTC. You joined newcomers, volunteered at the hospital and the Council on Aging. While you loved playing bridge, most of all you simply loved people. Again, our home was full of people and Laughter. You loved your grandchildren and were deeply committed to their welfare. You were always involved at their schools checking on their progress. You must have gone on at least 100 field trips. They all knew that your love was complete and unconditional. Your selflessness was essential in their development as compassionate human beings. You were always there. You were always listening.
Your last years were not so fine. The Stroke and the Cancer took a great toll. You were unable to do what you had always loved, to have lots of people around and to do for them. Anytime you began feeling sorry for yourself you recounted one of our many adventures in years past. Remember the waterfall in Switzerland? But that’s another story.
We miss you, but we also know you’re sitting at a table with cards in your hand wondering – “Should I bid four hearts or three no trump?” I’m sure by now you already know if QVC delivers to Heaven and have enjoyed a dance or two with the angels.
By the way, we are holding a memorial for you at 10 AM Friday, August 2, 2013. It will be held in the Sanctuary you found so peaceful at our church, the First United Methodist Church (FUMC), 3900 Loop Road, Monroe. Visitation will be at 9:30 in the Parlor. In your honor, in lieu of flowers a donation to the FUMC Outreach Ministries may be made.
