Nell Davis Hayes Faulk

Nell Davis Hayes Faulk was born on April 19, 1923 in Cotton Valley, Louisiana, one of the three daughters of Howard Reed Hayes and Flora Sue Davis Hayes.
Nell graduated from Cotton Valley High School. She attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and earned an associate degree from Northeast Louisiana Junior College in 1943. Thereafter she worked for her father at Lumbermen’s Supply Company in Monroe.
On January 1, 1949, she married Reynolds Trippett Faulk, Jr. in a home ceremony. Married for more than sixty years, they remained in love with each other until Tripp’s death in 2009.
During her life Nell was very active in her church and in Monroe civic life. She was a life-long Methodist and was a Sunday school teacher for over 43 years.
She was an active member of the Monroe Garden Club, the Junior Charity League, the Fort Miro Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the U.W.C.A., the Silver Waters Girl Scout Council, the Northeast Louisiana University Alumni Association and the NLU Golden Society. She thoroughly enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and growing beautiful flowers in her gardens. She and Tripp were early members of the Krewe of Janus. In 1996, she was nominated for the Quota Club Woman of the Year. In 2008, she appeared with her namesake granddaughter, Nell Rebowe, in Glamour Magazine in an article titled “Inherited Beauty”.
Nell and Tripp had three children, Reynolds Trippett Faulk III (and wife Jane), Mary Gay Faulk Carter (and husband Bruce), and Julie Sue Faulk Verlander (and husband David), all of whom survive her. Nell is also survived by twelve grandchildren: Elizabeth Nell Faulk Hughes, Megan Anne Faulk Rugg, Laura Jane Faulk, Carol Hayes Faulk, Julie Irene Faulk, Tracy Leigh Cobb Mitchell, Bruce Dale Carter, Jr., Matthew Hayes Carter, Angela Nell Rebowe, Philip Wayne Rebowe, Jr., David Faulk Verlander, and Daniel Reed Verlander. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Reynolds Thomason Carter and Benjamin Faulk Rugg.
She is survived by her two sisters, Charline Hayes Brown and Helen Hayes Norris, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Nell was a person who loved people, was unfailingly kind to them, who knew how to have fun, and was positive in her outlook on life on every day. She appreciated beautiful things and beautiful surroundings, but above all she appreciated and loved her family and her friends and her community, and she spent her life caring for all of them. She will be fondly remembered, and dearly missed.
Pallbearers will be Joe Howard Brown, Hayes Carter, Herbie Munholland, Marshall Munholland, Jim Norris, Philip Rebowe, Jr., and Daniel Verlander. Honorary pallbearers are Bruce Dale Carter, Jr., and David Faulk Verlander.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, June 1, 2013, at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, with The Rev. Whit Stodghill officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM at the funeral home.
Nell enjoyed the D.A.R. and genealogy, and therefore asked that memorials be made to the Fort Miro D.A.R. (C/o Mrs. James E. Files, 2707 Wilshire Street, Monroe, LA 71201); or to the Friends of the Ouachita Parish Public Library (1800 Stubbs Avenue, Monroe, LA 71201) in the name of Nell Hayes Faulk.
