Paul Sackman Marx

March 1, 1949 — December 28, 2013

Paul Sackman Marx was born in Monroe, Louisiana on March 1, 1949. On December 28, 2013, he passed away at home after a hard fought battle with lung cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac Sackman and Carol Elizabeth Lewis Marx.

Paul was a member of Temple B’Nai Israel as a child and teenager. He was baptized by Brother Terry Mims of Emmanuel Baptist Church in August, 2013.

Paul attended Lexington Elementary School, Lee Junior High and graduated from Neville High School in 1967. He attended LSU and ULM where he received his Master of Science Degree. Paul continued his doctoral studies in Botany at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. While living in Charlotte, North Carolina he literally built The Outdoor Provision Company from the ground up. Paul knew that what could be purchased was much better when he built it himself. He was an individual who was knowledgeable about many areas, and when there was something he did not know he learned it. He believed that you could never gain enough knowledge and was a lifelong learner. A true outdoorsman, his main passion was sailing and working on his sailboats.

Paul is survived by his wife, Mary Dossett Marx, his 3 children, Joseph Marx of Charlotte, North Carolina, Elizabeth Marx of Bethesda, Maryland, and Peter Marx of West Point, New York and grandson, Logan McClain Marx of Charlotte, North Carolina; sister, Jill Marx Kantrow and husband Michael of Baton Rouge, LA and sister, Barbara Marx Levy and husband Bernard of Houma, LA, numerous cousins of Monroe and California, 9 nieces and nephews, and 12 great nieces and nephews and Mary’s daughter Megan Moncrief of Brooklyn New York.

Paul was an amazing person. Only someone as special, rare and remarkable as him could do what he always did---made the lives of everyone around him nicer, brighter and more beautiful. He had a big heart and caring soul. He was living proof of how precious a person can be. For many there is now a void, because he touched their lives in a special way. However, take comfort in the knowledge that he is at peace, and that he would want to share his peace with you. Remember that warm and wonderful smile, and know that he is now sailing forever on the seas of Heaven. We thank the many who prayed and supported us through this journey.

Also, the family wishes to thank Dr. Blumenshein, Dr. Komaki and their staffs at MD Anderson, Houston, Texas and Dr. Barry Weinberger of Monroe for the their expert care and kindness during his journey.

A private cremation service was held on Monday, December 30, 2013 under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home. Mary, his children, and dearest friend Dean Benjamin of Ventura, California will sail Paul’s path to Anacapa Island and spread his ashes in the Pacific Ocean.

Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, Temple B’Nai Israel, the American Cancer Society, M.D. Anderson Thoracic Center, or Life Share Blood Center.
