Rosemary and her husband, John Louis Luffey, were founding members of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church and instilled Catholic Values and traditions in their children. Pope John Paul II bestowed the Honor of Dame on Rosemary as she entered as a member into the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher.

Heaven gained an angel when Rosemary Ellis Luffey died on Monday October 29, 2018 at Noon, surrounded by her family. Rosemary was born on July 23, 1930 to Albert Habeeb Ellis and Lillie Sherman Ellis in Monroe. Rosemary attended Sherrouse Elementary School and later graduated from Neville High School. Rosemary attended Northeast Louisiana State College and while there, married the love and dancing partner of her life, John Louis Luffey. Before graduating, she gave birth to her first son, John Louis Luffey, Jr. and loved to tell the story of how she brought her infant son with her to finish her classes.

After graduation, she and her husband, John continued to add to the Luffey family with five more children: Gary, Dave, Cynthia, Terri, and Monte.

Rosemary’s competitive spirit kept her active in tennis leagues in Monroe and her love of tennis was passed down to her children, as well. Rosemary continued to stay active until her death as she walked the ULM Coliseum and Activity Center many mornings a week with her friends.

Rosemary was active in many clubs and organizations in the community such as CPA Wives Club, ULM Faculty Wives Club, Monroe Garden Club, Potpourri Book Club, La Petite Maison Book Club and Grand Destinations Travel Club. One of her favorite passions was her bridge groups, where she attained the status of Life Master. She always referred to her bridge groups as her “bridge family” and spent many happy afternoons in games and in tournaments at the Bridge House.

Rosemary loved to travel and was able to visit many countries with her husband, John and daughter, Terri. She enjoyed trips with her travel club and reunions with her sister and brother, and with her family in Pass Christian, MS and Greenville, MS.

Rosemary was preceded in death by her parents, Lillie and Albert Habeeb Ellis; her beloved husband of 52 years, John; her daughter, Cynthia Anne; her grandsons, William Joseph Luffey and Roger Thomas Luffey; and her brother, Albert Ellis.

Rosemary held all her friends very close to her heart and treated them as if they were her family, especially, her longtime caretaker, Gaynelle Harris. The family would like to thank Sister Elizabeth at St. Joseph Assisted Living and her sitters for the care that she has received.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider memorials to the ULM Foundation (Professional Residence Endowment and Endowed Professorship in Accounting), St. Vincent de Paul Pharmacy, Joe and Roger Luffey Catholic Life Center in Ruston or your favorite charity.
