Roy “Spec” Boyd
We want to tell you about someone who was born to be a salesman….at 11 years old a red headed little boy with freckles started his career selling newspapers for a couple of cents a piece. The other salesman and friends gave him a nickname that has stuck throughout life – “Spec”. He worked a couple of odd jobs before joining Uncle Sam in 1941 and enlisting in the United States Army.
His tour of duty was only supposed to last for one year, but that year turned into 4 years, 9 months and 16 days of service. The young impressionable soldier was sent to Shelby, MS, where he became part of the medical core.
In 1942 his shipped sailed in and he was off to Iran on the SS America. He enjoyed his time in the Army and serving his country, but he was tired of seeing camels and sand and was ready to head home.
After his tour of duty, he settled back on the Ouachita River in his hometown of Monroe.
He decided to try his luck at booking. But he did better at picking women than booking bets. In 1948, he met the love of his life, the apple of his eye --- Kathryn Brantley. In 1949 he asked for her hand in marriage. A couple of years later along came a bundle of joy Sara, then Ronnie.
At this time downtown Monroe was a thriving hot spot and he joined in on the action and opened a billiard room. A few years down the road, the city was too much to handle so they tried their luck at farming. He bought his first cotton picker for $3500. But his cash crop did not come in…so he packed up the family and moved them to the big city, Houston that is!
Who would’ve every dreamed that a newspaper ad in the Houston paper would have changed his life forever. He found his destiny, learning to sell cars at Felton Ford. But it didn’t take long and his career was off…
With his new career, the Boyd’s moved back to Monroe and Ryan Chevrolet has never been the same since. He won several awards even the top honor of Salesman of the Year. He’s been known to wait on customers in the rain, sleet or snow. To win some of these awards he pulled out all the stops…even renting a billboard and placing his photo on it.
In 1974, at 1106 Louisville Avenue a landmark was born with the opening of a used car lot. And the family tradition has carried on…
Spec had many passions in his life; God, his family, his country, the car business and politics.
Today we would like to celebrate the life of a very special man – some may call him friend, husband, uncle, father, grandfather and great grandfather … but we all know him as Spec.

Graveside Services for Roy “Spec” Boyd, 89, of West Monroe, LA will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday, December 30, 2011 in the chapel of Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery in Monroe, LA with Pastor Bryan Laue officiating. Interment will follow in the Brantley Cemetery in Pioneer, LA under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home West Monroe, LA.
Mr. Boyd was born on January 17, 1922 in West Monroe, LA and died on December 29, 2011 in West Monroe, LA.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Brantley Boyd; children, Sara Boyd Johnson and Ronald Roy Boyd and wife, Gail all of West Monroe, LA; grandchildren, Marla Johnson of Jackson, MS and Lori Boyd Burke and husband, Paul of Vicksburg, MS; great grandchildren, Natalie Burke and Madalyn Burke both of Vicksburg, MS along with numerous nieces and nephews.
