Thomas Edward Mangan

On Tuesday, September 9,2020 , Thomas Edward Mangan, a loving husband, father, son and patriot, passed away at home surrounded by loving family at the age of 84.

Thomas was born June 2, 1936 in Rutland, Vermont. From a young age, he was charismatic, intelligent and a notable athlete. He was the Salutatorian of Wallingford High School, Class of 1954 where he served many leadership roles to include class president and captain of the championship basketball team. He was scouted by the Philadelphia Phillies minor league baseball team as a pitcher, he chose to serve his country after high school in the United State Air Force where he mastered his leadership skills. He ended his 27 year USAF career at Tyndall AFB in Panama City, FL as a Chief Master Sergeant, the highest rank of an enlisted airman. During his time in the military, he received many notable achievements for his outstanding leadership, service, bravery, and intelligence. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the AF Commendation Medal, AF Outstanding Unit Award, AF Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the AF Longevity Service Award Ribbon, and the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon. He was also a classic car and gun enthusiast. He could fix any engine he was challenged with and supported 2nd amendment rights vehemently. After his military career, he and his wife built a log home together in the mountains of Tennessee and retired there for more than 20 years.

He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 38 years, Carrie Emily Mangan; son, Thomas Arthur Mangan; daughter, Patricia Marie Jones(Tom); son, Kenneth Edward Mangan (Pamela); of Jacksonville, FL and daughter, Kimberly Bonebright Extine (Dr. James Extine) of Monroe, La. ;sister, Judith Jones of Steep Falls, Maine. He was blessed with grandchildren Colby Mangan, Chloe Mangan, Patricia Holmes, Shannon Austin, Maureen Jones, Evan Extine, Taylor Extine , Merritte Broxson (Samantha), Madison Extine, Elijah Extine; great-grandchildren Gauge Holmes, Couper Holmes, Willow Austin, Bentley Broxson, and Waylon Broxson.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Thomas and Helen Mangan, his two younger brothers Merrick and Bernard Mangan and his youngest son Darrin John Mangan.

Thank you to Dr. Charles Morgan for his compassionate care of our family during this difficult time and to Compassus Hospice Care as he transitioned to be with our heavenly father.
