Funeral services for Mr. Vaughn Lavelle Phelps, 87, of Monroe will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, June 26, 2008, in Feazel Chapel of First Baptist Church of West Monroe with Dr. Dennis L. Phelps officiating. Interment will follow at Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Farmerville, LA under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.
Mr. Phelps was born August 15, 1920 to L.L. “Buddy” Phelps and Ila Gladys Cobb Phelps in Union Parish, LA. He graduated from Farmerville High School, and attended Louisiana Tech and LSU Baton Rouge. Mr. Phelps served in the U. S. Air Force during WWII having attended training at Selman Field in Monroe, LA.
Mr. Phelps was in the Home Improvement Business (Phelps Home Improvements in Monroe) for forty-two years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of West Monroe for over sixty years, and a member of Bobby Wilson’s Sunday school class.
Survivors include his wife of almost sixty years, Vestal Phelps; sons, Dr. Dwight S. Phelps and wife Lynda of Ft. Myers, FL, and Dr. Dennis L. Phelps and wife Robbin of New Orleans, LA; grandchildren, Amanda Lee Phelps DeLisle and husband Garrett, Adam Montgomery and Angela of Denver, CO, Kristen Phelps of Conway, AR, and David Phelps of New Orleans, LA; great grandchildren, Logan Kurtis DeLisle and Bryson Montgomery; one brother Bernie Louis Phelps of Monroe, LA; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Pallbearers will be David Phelps, John Cobb, Ralph Reed, William Guyton, Rev. Don Holloway, and Bobby Swanner. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Perry Hancock, Darrell Washam, Russell Wink, Ray Goodson, and Fred Thompson.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.
